The High Acuity Low Occurrence (HALO) procedures course by Manchester Medical Academy is a procedural skills course taught in a simulation setting on animal cadavers to give a realistic feel to the procedures. The course is designed to develop and maintain the technical aspects of these procedural skills, improve decision-making and build confidence in carrying out the procedures safely and effectively. HALO situations are high-pressure, high-stakes situations and their impact extends to much beyond the technical aspect of the procedures. They involve decision-making, leadership, teamwork, communication, situational awareness, inter-specialty coordination, anticipation and forward planning, just to name a few. Managing these situations comes with experience and regular practice. It may be in-appropriate to believe that this one-day simulation course will confer proficiency to carry out these procedures independently.
